For the 24-part series Placeholders, plaster casts were made of darkroom tools—such as developing trays and funnels—and photographed as individual parts. Similar to the photographic process, the cast is based on indexicality, and the negative plaster cast serves as a means of reproduction. The original form is lost in the casting process; inherent in this process—much like in photography—is an experience of loss, as the represented object remains absent.
