A display case is a display case is a display case. Products, exhibits, and occasionally information take center stage in the everyday world. Staged promises, conveyed through screens and displays, analog and digital storefronts. Window shopping. Children pressing their noses flat against the glass. Within reach and yet so far away.

What if the silent servant steps out of the background and the medium itself—in which connection and separation materialize simultaneously—begins to speak? Jana Pressler thinks with and about materials in works that reflect on visual relationships and mechanisms of perception. In doing so, she combines media-reflective questions with socially relevant issues in a sober yet playful manner. In “Introspection,” the artist continues her examination of the materiality of urban spaces and social surfaces, based on intensive observations of everyday life.

Taking the fully glazed display case in the center of Moabit as her starting point, she develops a site-specific work that extends her artistic exploration of the material and metaphorical dimensions of the concept of “transparency”and lends presence to what would otherwise be nothing more than the frame we look straight through.
